Philip Torrens
Born in Nova Scotia as the son of a one-time officer in England's merchant marine, Philip Torrens grew up with salt water running in his veins.

As a child, he spent many happy hours lost in the adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Hornblower, and The Swallows & Amazons. He joined the Boy Scouts for a short time, but discovered that he preferred wilderness travel in small groups or alone. Colin Fletcher's The Complete Walker inspired him to try solo kayak tripping.

Philip's been lucky enough to paddle in some exotic locations, including the Great Lakes, and in both the Canadian and Norwegian Arctic. Lately, his kayak has been plying his adopted home waters of British Columbia, where several lifetimes' worth of exploring await. Philip also enjoys photography, reading about natural history and evolutionary biology, and fancies himself an amateur paleontologist. He sometimes combines his kayak trips with fossil hunting.

Philip's writing has appeared in numerous magazines including Canoe & Kayak, Paddler, Sea Kayaker, and Explore. He has two stories in Mugged by a Moose, including a remarkable tale about fending off a polar bear attack in the Canadian Arctic.
